2026 Illinois Senate Race
An open seat race following Dick Durbin's retirement, with a competitive Democratic primary for the reliably blue Illinois seat while Republicans seek an unlikely breakthrough.
Raja Krishnamoorthi has represented Illinois's 8th congressional district since 2017. Born in New Delhi and raised in Buffalo, he became the first South Asian to represent Illinois in Congress. He serves on the House Intelligence Committee and is known for work on technology policy, counterintelligence, and drug pricing reform.
Alexi Giannoulias has served as Illinois Secretary of State since 2023. A former state treasurer who ran for Senate in 2010, he is known for modernizing election administration and voter registration. His Secretary of State work rebuilt his political standing and he is a strong contender in the Democratic primary.
Darin LaHood has represented Illinois's 16th congressional district since 2015. Son of former Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood, he serves on the House Ways and Means and Intelligence Committees. One of the few Republican members from Illinois, he brings a pragmatic approach to conservative fiscal policy and national security.
